The past few weeks have been trying....

To say that the past few weeks have been hard is an understatement. What we are about to share now is something we kept relatively private from anyone outside our immediate family. To be quite honest, we just didn't know what to say and didn't have any concrete answers.

When we went in for our "big" ultrasound back in June, the ultrasound tech seem to take a long time with certain images related to Baby Girl's head. We didn't really think that much of it until the midwife we were seeing that day came in looking concerned. In not the greatest bed-side manner, she proceeded to tell us that some of the baby's brain ventricle measurements looked abnormal. In addition, her pinkies on both hands seems oddly formed. Not to go into too much detail, but my mind immediately started racing with all the things that could be wrong with Baby Girl and the midwife did nothing to help calm me or Nick down.

Two weeks ago, we had a full day at Children's Hospital in Boston for intensive screening and testing. After an almost 2 hour ultrasound, I also had an MRI done. I pray that I never have to have an MRI again. It was one of the worst things I've ever experienced. Thank God Nick was able to be in the room with me and hold my hand while I was in the machine. After starting our day at 7:30 am, we finally met with the chief radiologist and neurologist to go over all the results at 5:30pm. Through the intercession of our Blessed Mother, our prayers were answered. Both doctors said that everything looked normal. We would continue to be screened at our hospital with ultrasounds every 2 weeks, but that we were not considered high risk.

Nothing can really prepare for scares like that. We knew, no matter what, that we were going to bring our little girl into the world, but the unknown of what we might face was quite the challenge for us, both as individuals and as a couple. It was an experience that makes us grateful for the prayer life we have. We had our first ultrasound at the Maternal Fetal Medicine department at South Shore Hospital and Baby Girl was still looking good. And that's all we can ask for.
